Miami is famous for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and bustling nightlife. However, navigating Miami’s roads can be risky, especially during certain hours of the day and week. Knowing the most dangerous periods on the road and taking precautions can help keep you and your loved ones safe.
If you have been involved in a car crash, our Miami car accident lawyers at Aigen Injury Law are committed to helping victims of negligent drivers recover a fair settlement.
Morning and Evening Commutes During Weekdays
While rush hour traffic can be chaotic in any major urban center, the Greater Miami area is home to over 6.1 million people. Many of them are on the roads during the weekday morning (7-9 a.m.) and evening (4-7 p.m.) commutes, creating traffic congestion peaks.
Drivers are often in a hurry to get to work or home, which can lead to aggressive driving behaviors, frequent lane changes, and rear-end collisions.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), the hours in and around the evening commute are the most dangerous. These periods consistently see a higher number of fatal and incapacitating accidents.
The FLHSMV 2022 Crash Facts report determined the most dangerous hours from Monday to Friday are as follows:

How to Avoid Crashes During Rush Hour:
- Plan Ahead: Leave earlier or later to avoid the busiest hours. If you have a flexible schedule, consider adjusting your commute times.
- Stay Alert: Avoid using mobile phones or infotainment devices while driving, particularly when navigating congested areas or merging lanes. They are among the top causes of distracted driving.
- Use Alternative Routes: Use less-traveled side roads or public transportation to avoid traffic congestion whenever possible.
Late Night and Early Morning Weekends
Miami is historically associated with its lively nightlife scene and weekend social activities, particularly in popular neighborhoods like South Beach, Coconut Grove, and the downtown clubs. The city has thousands of bars, clubs, restaurants, and other after-hours establishments.
However, weekend nights, particularly between midnight and 4 a.m. when drivers are leaving the bars to head home, are some of the most dangerous times to drive in Miami. Many drivers are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both. The 2022 FLHSMV Crash Facts report recorded the following statistics:
- Alcohol-impaired Drivers: 261 fatal crashes and 228 incapacitating crashes were confirmed to involve alcohol-impaired drivers in 2022.
- Drug-impaired Drivers: Motorists under the influence of drugs were confirmed to have caused 238 fatal and 70 incapacitating accidents.
- Both Drugs and Alcohol: As many as 191 fatal crashes and 48 incapacitating ones involved drivers under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.
- Most Dangerous Days and Hours: Saturday and Sunday are the most fatal days of the week. 651 fatal impacts occurred on a Saturday and 586 on a Sunday in 2022, more than any other day of the week. The highest number of Saturday accidents occurred at 10:00 p.m. (56), whereas the most dangerous hour on Sunday is midnight (54 crashes).
How to Avoid Late-Night and Early-Morning Crashes:
- Stay Off the Roads: If possible, avoid driving during these hours. If you must drive, be extra vigilant and watch for erratic drivers.
- Use Rideshare Services: If you’re out for a night on the town, consider using Uber, Lyft, or a designated driver service to get home safely rather than drive after drinking any amount of alcohol.
- Stay Sober and Rest Up: If you’re planning to drive, make sure you’ve had enough sleep to avoid the effects of drowsy driving. Avoid alcohol and other substances altogether.
Other Dangerous Periods
In addition to dangerous weekdays and hours to watch for, Florida’s climate and unique weather can create dangerous driving situations.
- Cloudy and Rainy Conditions: Miami’s climate is known for its sudden and intense tropical downpours, especially during hurricane season. These downpours can quickly change driving conditions and catch drivers off-guard. The 2022 FLHSMV Crash Facts report shows that over 106,000 accidents occurred under cloudy skies and over 73,000 in the rain.
- Low Visibility: The last months of hurricane season coincide with shorter daylight periods, creating longer nights furthering reducing road visibility. Over 1,900 fatal accidents in 2022 occurred after dark, including 850 on unlit roads. This number is higher than the fatalities in broad daylight (1,394).
What to Do If You’re in a Car Accident
Crashes still happen even when you play it safe, especially when other drivers are negligent. If you’re injured in a crash, prioritize your safety and that of your passengers. Call 911 for immediate medical help and report the accident to the police. Document the scene and as much evidence of your injuries as possible, then contact a Miami car accident lawyer as soon as possible to protect your rights.
